What to Expect During a Dental Implant Consultation

Dental implants provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Before scheduling your surgery, it’s important to have a consultation with an oral surgeon to make sure you are the right candidate for the procedure.

How a Dental Implant Consultation Works

Oral Examination

During a consultation, the oral surgeon will thoroughly examine the patient’s teeth, gums and assess their overall oral health. The oral surgeon will go over the patient’s medical history. They will evaluate the patient’s bone density and quantity because there must be enough healthy bone remaining from where the patient’s tooth was extracted for a dental implant to be successful. A patient with inadequate bone volume may need a bone graft before a dental implant.

X-Ray Examination

X-rays and computer tomography scans (CT scans) are usually performed during the examination. An x-ray exam shows how dense the bone actually is and determines if there is enough bone structure to place the implant. The oral surgeon also determines exactly where the implant should be placed based off the patient’s x-ray.

Treatment Options Discussion

After the examination, the oral surgeon will explain the different treatment options. If dental implants are right for the patient a treatment plan will be formulated by the primary dentist and the surgeon.  Do not be afraid to ask questions! You need to be well informed in order to be confident in your decision.

Once a dental implant treatment has been determined the oral surgeon will go over the treatment process including:

  • How long the treatment will take
  • How many appointments will be necessary
  • Local anesthesia and sedation dentistry options
  • The recovery period
  • Aftercare instructions
